After finishing reading this story, I could not understand why Vasilisa started to sober after listening to the Gospel about Peter. After reading twice about the Gospel, I thought there might be similarities between Peter and Vasilisa. Vasilisa's daughter, Lukerya, was beaten by her husband. However, through Vasilisa's tear, we can infer that Vasilisa was regretting her attitude, being a bystander. I thought the author of this book Anton Chekhov deliberately set Vasilisa's job as a nurse to show emphasize Vasilisa's attitude similar to Peter. Peter was a student of Jesus and he denied it because he was afraid. Like what Peter did, Vasilisa might be afraid of Lukerya's husband and she just did nothing even though she could help Lukerya as a nurse. As a result, she felt similar between herself and Peter, and she regrets her behavior and cries just like Peter did. So ultimately what did Chekhov want to say through this story?
